Telecommunication is a vital part of any infrastructure, industry or economy and provides business, money and market stability in the world. It is the most important aspect for the growth of human society and culture. Today the telecommunication industry contributes revenue under 3% of the gross world product. With the growing advanced technology, the primitive methods of communication have been replaced by the latest and hi tech technology. Telecommunication system consists of basic three elements - transmitter, transmission medium and a receiver. The signals used in a telecommunication system can be analogue or digital. A transmitter takes information and converts it to a signal whereas the transmission medium carries the signal and the receiver, receives the signal and converts it back to usable information. Telecommunication systems are 2 way systems with a single device acting as both a transmitter and a receiver. Phone line is also called a point-to-point communication since it has one transmitter and one receiver. A radio is called a broadcast due to the powerful transmitter and has numerous receivers.
The terms generally used in telecommunication are analogue, digital, network, channel and modulation. The signal in a telecommunication system can be analogue or digital. An analogue signal is varied continuously with respect to the information whereas in digital signal the information is encoded as a set of discrete values. A network is a collection of transmitters, receivers or transceivers that communicate with each other. A channel is used to send multiple streams of information. Modulation is shaping of a signal to convey information which can be used to represent a digital message as an analogue waveform.
Telecommunication indeed has played a very vital role in building global empires. The main means of telecommunication are telephone, telegraph, radio, television, computer networks and internet. People who are up to date with the rapid growing technology and have good technical skills are getting great job opportunities. The building of more advanced telecommunication networks like fiber optic lines, faster wireless networks and advanced switching equipment will increase more employment and would improve the reliability of such advanced networks and reduce the maintenance requirements. There is already a growing demand of telecommunication services in our day to day life like high speed internet, video on demand, wireless and internet based telephone services.
